The Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge – Fishing of Nea Koutali emphasizes on the educational nature of the exhibits and adopts modern teaching methods in order to create a firm relationship with the educational community.
The collaboration between the museum and schools establishes a permanent and stable relationship between the institution and students, creating cultural experiences and providing entertainment through cultural heritage based on modern teaching methods. The museum, as a body of informal learning, can operate especially in local communities as a place of memory, connecting the past and the present of people and places through its material and “intangible” exhibits.
The connection between museum and school frames in an experiential way many school subjects, such as History, Local History, Aesthetic Education, Environmental Studies, Mathematics and Physics. By this opening up of the museum to school all human senses are fostered (see, hear, touch, move, feel), as well as the sense of perception (respond, meditate, investigate, communicate) and practice (do, create, produce). A combination of theory and practice is also achieved through this museum and school collaboration (works and projects by the children themselves, acquaintance with techniques, materials and instruments). Particular emphasis is given on the communicative character of the themes of the museum and children’s awareness on social issues can be promoted (ecology, recycling, human rights, migration, etc.).
